SugarSync cloud storage
As every major PC and software manufacturer seems to be offering its own cloud storage solution now, it's easy to overlook the little guys. One of the more interesting dedicated cloud backup and syncing specialists is SugarSync, who offer a generous amount of free storage and allow you to upload any type of information you wish onto their servers.
SugarSync, in its current form, was launched in 2009 and has gained an impressive global following. But is it the right cloud storage solution for you?
What does SugarSync offer?
You are provided with 5GB of free cloud storage space for any type of information, from photos to documents and videos. There is an impressive amount of support for different types of desktop and mobile Operating Systems, at the time of writing the only platform the company didn’t have an official client available for is Windows Phone 7, but this is currently in development and should be available this year.
How does SugarSync work?
The SugarSync application allows you to access any files you have sent to its online storage facility from your mobile device or computer. Like other clients, it syncs documents placed in dedicated folders to the cloud, and mirrors your folder and file structures across all the devices you access them from. The device even offers users integrated access through Microsoft Outlook via a plugin – very appealing to heavy business users.
One particularly nice feature is the ability to control your filing system using SugarSync’s desktop file manager. While other clients have web based interfaces to control syncing and folder access, SugarSync achieves this without the need for the online login process – very handy indeed and allows for detailed control over files and access.
How do I get SugarSync?
For mobile platforms, check out your respective app store. Desktop users can download the excellent SugarSync desktop client and SugarSync quick start guide straight to their computers.
Final verdict
The application is free to download and you get 5 GB of free storage spaceto start with. While 5 GB is nothing to be frowned at, it seems a little light compared to some of the services being offered by the like of Microsoft and Google. However, it certainly provides you with a decent incentive to take a look.
