Beginners Guide to BlackBerry App World

Mobiles

BlackBerry App World is Research In Motion’s app store, where you can download additional content for your BlackBerry smartphone.  It is available all over the world, supports 26 currencies, 7 languages and is available for all BlackBerry devices since the old-school BlackBerry 8100 series.  It comes pre-installed on all BlackBerry OS 6 and OS 7 devices, and can easily be installed if you can't see it on your handset.

BlackBerry App World has over 65,000 applications, which are split into various categories.  The apps can be free to download, or prices start at 69p. There are several categories, including “Top Paid” and “Top Free” listings.

You can browse BlackBerry App World either using the application on a BlackBerry device, or by going to the web store in a browser.

To use BlackBerry App World, start by locating the BlackBerry App World icon in the ‘All’ Tray.  If the icon is missing, or App World is not pre-installed, you can install it following the steps below.

Installing BlackBerry App World

If your BlackBerry smartphone does not already have BlackBerry App World installed on it, simply begin by opening the browser on the handset.Once open, enter uk.blackberry.com/appworld into the address bar at the top.

Scroll down the web page which appears, then click on the “Download it Today” link. Click on the link and follow the onscreen instructions, ensuring you choose your preferred language and accept the download!

Find and Download an App

Once App World is installed or located on a device, launch it and follow the steps below to get your hands on an application!

When you first launch BlackBerry App World you'll see the featured view, where popular apps are advertised in a carousel. To view them, scroll left and right through the seleciton. Below the carousel you'll see app categories. You can either view apps by category, or if you have a vague idea of the application you want, simply start typing it into the search box at the top of the screen.

Once entered, hit return on the keyboard to continue.

In my example, I chose Snake.  Now the search results are back, all that I need to do is to select which app to download. Check out the app's summary, screenshots, star ratings and reviews to see whether it's for you.

If the application is free, you will see a Download button. If there’s a price tag you will see a Buy button instead. Clicking 'download' or 'buy' will start the download process.

If you are purchasing an app, you will need to provide App World with either credit/debit card or PayPal payment details.

If this is the first time you have used BlackBerry App World, you may be required to sign into or create a BlackBerry ID.  Choose 'create new' from the bottom of the page.

The download should now start automatically, and once the app has been installed you'll see a prompt that it's ready to use. Some apps require a handset reboot before you can use them. If that's the case, let the device go through a normal reboot cycle and you'll be ready to enjoy your application.

Agent tip

Downloading applications can take a long time, speed this up by connecting to your home Wi-Fi first.

Find and Use the App

Once an app is downloaded and installed, it should be available in the apps tray. Sometimes however, the application goes into a folder called 'downloads'.  Simply find the app on the device and tap it to open!
