Bluetooth user guide - how to connect and share over Bluetooth
What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is a short range wireless technology you can use to connect your mobile or tablet to a compatible accessory, like a handsfree kit, headset or speaker. It also allows you to connect two mobile devices together without cables and transfer content between them.
Bluetooth is now embedded into most mobile phones and tablets. It's free and easy to use, but you need to be aware of the security and battery life implications before using it.
What can you do with Bluetooth?
- Send files, such as contacts and photos, from one phone or tablet to another
- Connect Bluetooth accessories such as keyboards, speakers and stereo headphones to your mobile device
- Pair your device with integrated in-car systems and stream music or make hands free calls
How do I use Bluetooth?
On Android handsets and tablets
Settings > Connections and Networks > Bluetooth settings
From here you can search for devices to pair with, adjust your visibility to other users and turn your Bluetooth on and off.
On BlackBerry handsets
From the notifications bar at the top of the screen > select 'Bluetooth' to toggle on/off
To pair with specific devices, access 'settings > Bluetooth' and select the device to pair with from the dropdown menu.
On iOS (iPhone, iPad)
Settings > General > Bluetooth
From here you can toggle your Bluetooth on and off and search for devices
On Windows Phone
Settings > System > Bluetooth
From here you can toggle your Bluetooth on and off and search for devices
Bluetooth Best Practice
- Make sure that both of the devices you wish to pair are Bluetooth enabled, and that Bluetooth is activated on both. Not all wireless gadgets are - if in doubt check with your manufacturer, or ask a Geek Squad Agent.
- Ensure the two devices are designed to be paired; devices which are Bluetooth enabled won't always pair if they are not intended to do so. An example could be an enabled keyboard and headset. Common types of connections include:
- Mobile phone to hands free car kit
- Mobile phone to wireless headset
- Wireless headphones to a laptop
- A tablet and wireless keyboard
- A computer and wireless mouse
- When pairing two devices, ensure they both have their Bluetooth activated and set to “visable”
- When not in use, we recommend keeping your Bluetooth set to off. This preserves battery life and prevents any unwanted connections from occurring
- Do not accept Bluetooth connection requests from unknown devices. A Bluetooth connection gives another user access to content stored on your device, which can be damaging if they wish to use it for malicious reasons, or desire access to content that you don't wish to share with them.
When used properly, Bluetooth is a fast, free and easy way to connect devices or transfer content. Unlike 3G, it won't consume your data allowance. Just ensure not to leave it turned on for prolonged periods when not in use.
