Unboxing and assembling your Archos 55b Platinum

First of all, let's make sure you have everything you need. Inside the box* you should find:

  • 1 x Archos 55b Platinum
  • 1 x Battery
  • 1 x USB cable
  • 1 x Mains power adapter
  • 1 x Wired headphones
  • 1 x Documentation pack

*some box contents may vary

Looking at the corner of the Platinum's back cover, down near the bottom of the handset, you will see a notch cut into the cover itself. Use your fingernail to carefully prise the edge of the back cover away from the phone, until it comes away in your hand. If the battery is in the phone, please remove it, then place the Platinum's screen side down on a soft, non scratching surface, with the camera away from you.

archos 55b platinum insert SIMAt the top end of the battery compartment there are two housings. Your micro-SIM goes on the left, and slides in with the metal contacts facing down (towards the front of the phone). Make sure the cut corner of the SIM is on the side that goes in first!

If you wish to put a microSD (memory) card into your Archos 55b Platinum, it should be inserted into the right-hand slot. Make sure the metal contacts facing down (towards the front of the phone). Slide the card home until you feel it latch into place.

That's all the assembly your Archos will need, so replace the battery, clip the back cover back in to place and hold down the power button for a couple of seconds until your smartphone turns on. You're now ready to continue on to the next step of our guide which is completing the setup wizard!

Set up your phone for the first time

If this is the first time you've turned on your new Archos 55b Platinum, it's time to complete the setup wizard! This is a fairly straightforward process which we've documented below to help make things easier to follow.

Archos 55b Platinum setup 1Archos 55b Platinum setup 2Archos 55b Platinum setup 3Archos 55b Platinum setup 4

  1. Turn your new phone on and you will see the Welcome screen. Choose your language from the list and press the arrow in the yellow circle when you're ready to continue.
  2. You will now be asked to select your Wi-Fi network. From the list of networks displayed, find your network name then tap your finger on it. If you're not near your router and can't set up Wi-Fi, just tap Skip.
  3. Type in your Wi-Fi password in the box provided and press Connect. If you're unsure whether you've entered your password correctly, tick the Show password box to verify what you've typed in.
  4. You will then be invited to add your Google account. If you have an email address ending with or, or are migrating over from a previous Android phone, then enter your email address where shown and tap Next. If you don't have a Google account, tap Create a new account and set up a new account for free by following the Gmail setup instructions which will appear on the screen. You can also Skip this step, but we would not recommend doing so because Android handsets rely on a Google account to download apps and backup & sync data.

Archos 55b Platinum setup 5Archos 55b Platinum setup 6Archos 55b Platinum setup 7Archos 55b Platinum setup 8

  1. When prompted, enter your password into the 55b Platinum, then tap Next to proceed. If you're signing up for a new account, complete the form.
  2. When you add a Google account you must agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, both of which you can inspect by tapping the required link. Tap Accept to continue.
  3. If you haven't set up any payment information on your Google account you will be asked to set some up now. This is optional, as many items are free to download from the Play Store, so tap your chosen payment method or tap Remind me later to skip this for now, then tap Continue.
  4. Now you must decide whether to secure your phone with a lock or not. Adding a lock screen adds a layer of protection to your data, but if you can't remember your password it can be difficult to sign back in. To lock your phone, tap set lock screen now. If you don't want to set this up, tap Skip.

Archos 55b Platinum setup 9Archos 55b Platinum setup 10Archos 55b Platinum setup 11Archos 55b Platinum setup 12

  1. If you chose to skip setting up the security of a lock screen, you will be reminded that your handset isn't secure without one, and will be prompted to tap Skip anyway to confirm this. If you want to add a lock screen, tap Don't skip.
  2. Choose which lock screen type you're more comfortable with. You can choose from drawing a pattern, a numbered PIN or setting a password of letters and/or numbers.
  3. We chose to set up a PIN, but the instructions are nearly the same for all lock screen types. Enter your PIN, password or pattern then press the arrow to continue.
  4. Confirm your PIN, password or pattern on the next page and press the arrow to continue with the setup.

Archos 55b Platinum setup 13Archos 55b Platinum setup 14Archos 55b Platinum setup 15Archos 55b Platinum setup 16

  1. When your phone is secured, you can choose to hide notifications from the lock screen. This means you must unlock your phone to read your notifications, if you would rather still see the notifications make sure show all notification content is selected and press next.
  2. On the next page you will be asked to confirm which Google services you'd like to take advantage of. The first option is whether to Backup and restore your data to your Google account. This is especially helpful if you're upgrading from a previous Android phone and also helps keep your information safe if you should lose your new handset. Tap More to see the other services options.
  3. The second and third sections are about Location services, which help tailor internet searches to match your location, as well as providing feedback for apps which need to know where you are. Finally you'll be asked about improving Android by sending feedback to Google. We recommend leaving all these boxes ticked, but they aren't necessary in order to continue. When you're ready, tap Next.
  4. You will then see information about Google Now, which keeps you up-to-date with information pulled from various apps on your phone, presented in one timeline. If you have an appointment in your calendar, for example, Google Now may show you local or motorway traffic information and travel times based on this to help make sure you're on time for your meeting! Tap More to read more information about the service.

  1. If you'd like to try out Google Now, select Yes, I'm in. If you'd prefer not to set this up at the moment (you can always set this up later on) select Skip, and when you're ready to move on tap Next.
  2. This last step of the setup wizard offers you some free applications. You can choose to skip this by tapping Next, but if you wish to install them tap the Install button.
  3. You will be asked about allowing Google to check your device's activity for security problems and threats. You can choose to Decline or Accept this by tapping the appropriate response.
  4. When the free applications have installed, tap Next to complete the setup wizard.
  5. Your home screen will now be displayed. At the top is a green banner advising you that you can customise your home screen by touching and holding on the background wallpaper at any time. Tap Got it to dismiss this.

Navigating Around the Archos 55b Platinum

At the very bottom of the phone are three touch buttons. In the middle, the house icon will always bring you back to the Home screen. To the left the square icon on the right shows you Recent apps, and allows you to switch quickly between them or close them. To the right, the curly arrow is the Back button and will take you back one step in menus or apps.

Archos 55b Platinum Setup 6Above the Home icon you will see a white circular icon with six dots on it. This is the Apps icon, and will take you to a list of all the apps that are on your 50. Connecting to Wi-Fi and mobile networks

The Archos 55b Platinum is a great handset, but without an internet connection many of its finest features are redundant. Fresh apps can't be downloaded, existing apps can't be updated, and your social networks and email accounts can't retrieve new data! Make sure your phone is working to its fullest by getting connected using our short guide below.

Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

You may well have connected to your Wi-Fi router during the initial set up of your phone, but if you didn't, or wish to connect to a new network, then follow these simple steps to get connected.

Archos 55b Platinum wifi 1Archos 55b Platinum wifi 2Archos 55b Platinum wifi 3Archos 55b Platinum wifi 4

From the home screen:

  1. Swipe your finger down from the top of the screen twice, then tap on the cog in the top-right corner of the notification panel to access your Settings menu.
  2. In the Wireless & networks section, tap the Wi-Fi line to enter the settings.
  3. If you don't see any network names, check that the switch is turned on (showing green), tapping it to enable Wi-Fi if it is off. You will see a list of networks on screen, locate your network name in the list and tap on it.
  4. Enter the Wi-Fi password for your network in the box provided, ensuring you replicate any capital letters correctly, then tap Connect. The password can often be found on a sticker on your router, and may also be called a wireless passphrase, WEP key or WPA key.

If the password was accepted, you should now be connected to your wireless network and the Wi-Fi symbol will appear on the top line of the display, next to the signal bars.

Connect to Mobile Internet

Mobile internet access is usually disabled when your handset is connected to a Wi-Fi network, so you will need to turn Wi-Fi off to set up or troubleshoot mobile data connections. We'll help you do this, but don't forget to turn it back on again afterwards!

Archos 55b Platinum Data 4When your mobile internet settings are correct, your phone will show a letter (G, E, 3G, H, H+ or 4G) and a pair of arrows just beside the signal bars on the top line of the display, so keep an eye out for this data indicator appearing!

  1. Swipe your finger down from the top of the phone screen twice, then tap on the cog to go to the Settings menu.
  2. Tap More to view mobile data settings.
  3. Archos 55b Platinum internet 5Tap Mobile networks.
  4. Tap Access point names to see which settings are currently in use by the phone to connect to the internet. If no settings are saved, you may be asked to choose your mobile network from a list. Tap the correct line to select your network.
  5. If that doesn't connect you, or you can't see the correct network setting, we can pull the mobile internet settings from the SIM card. Tap the Menu icon (three dots in the top-right corner) and then tap Reset to default.
  6. A list of available network settings available on your SIM card will appear. If one of these corresponds to your network, tap the name to select it, then check for the data indicator.

If you're still not connected, you may need to enter the settings manually. To do so, go back into Access point names. Tap the + icon on the menu bar which will open a form for you to complete. We have created the Geek Squad Guide to APN Settings to help you find and enter settings for most UK mobile networks. Enter the details for your network, then tap the menu button (3 dots) and tap Save to set. Check the data indicator again.

If you are still not connected after this step, or your mobile network is not listed in our guide, then we would recommend contacting your mobile network to ask them to send the settings through to your handset.

Find out how to add your email accounts

Like most modern mobile phones, the Archos 55b Platinum supports multiple POP3, IMAP and Exchange accounts so if you have one email address for work and a separate one for home, receiving all those emails is easier than you think. Follow the guide below to set up your preferred email accounts.

Google Account (Gmail) Setup

We covered setting up a Google account in the initial setup, but if you didn't complete it then you can add one now. A Google account is probably the most important account you can add to your Archos as without one you won't be able to download apps, or back your handset up.

  1. Enter your Gmail password then tap Next. If you're creating a new account, complete all sections of the form.
  2. Agree to the Terms of Service (which you can inspect by tapping any of the links) by tapping Accept to complete signing in to your Google account.
  3. You will be asked about backing up your 55b Platinum to the Google account. This will allow you to recover data if your phone is reset, or replaced. If you don't want to do this, untick the box. Tap Next to proceed.
  4. You will then be asked about setting up payment info for your Play Store account, which can be linking a payment card, redeeming a voucher, or having items billed through your mobile network if they allow this. It isn't necessary to do this right now, but does make it easier for you to purchase apps and media through the Play Store. Choose your payment method, or select Remind me later, then tap Next.

Email for your Google account will be delivered into the Gmail app on your 55b Platinum.

Email Account Setup

Adding a non-Google email address is a very similar process to adding a Gmail address, but you may need additional information if your account is a non-standard one.

  3. If this isn't a Google email address, choose either IMAP or POP3 - most accounts are IMAP these days, so pick that one first.
  4. Enter your email address in the field provided then tap Next.

  2. If everything was successful you will see the account options screen which lets you choose how often your handset checks for new mail, and other account specific options. Make your choices, then tap Next.
  3. You will be asked to choose a name for the account, and you should enter your name in the lower box. This will be displayed on any emails you send from your phone so you should probably keep it clean!
  4. You will then see a line corresponding to your mail account showing on the Accounts screen of your 55b Platinum. If you have any other accounts to add, repeat the process to add them.

If your account did not configure automatically, you will need to supply some more settings and enter them manually to be able to receive email. Tap Manual setup to start entering these settings. You will need to know your account type (POP, IMAP or Exchange), email username, password, and incoming & outgoing mail server information.

Check out Geek Squad's guide to email server settings to assist you with inputting this information, but if your provider is not listed you may need to contact them directly for more specific information .

Read our tips to learn more about your phone

Now you've set up the basics on your Archos 55b Platinum, let's finish off this Quick Start guide by giving you a few tips to help you get the most out of your new phone.

If you have a question about your phone and can't find the answer here, why not post a comment at the bottom of the page and share it with us!

Monitor your Data Usage

Archos 55b Platinum Tips 1The Archos 55b Platinum comes with a really useful monitor to help you keep an eye on your data usage. This should hopefully help prevent you from running up a large bill through using more data than your allowance.

To set this up go to Settings > Data Usage > and then click on the tab for the SIM card you wish to check.

Wth the settings page open, you can set your billing cycle with a drop-down menu to ensure the counter resets when your mobile bill is produces every month, and there is a switch to stop you from going over the limit you set.

There are two sliders to help you monitor your usage, one to show your data limit and another to provide you with a warning that you're getting close to your limit.

The only thing to bear in mind is that this shows the data usage as your phone interprets it, not as your mobile network calculates it. This means that you might benefit from setting the sliders a little below your actual allowance to avoid going over - at least until you see how they compare!

Check your Battery Usage

Archos 55b Platinum Tips 2If you think your battery isn't lasting as long as it should, then there is a battery monitor built into the 50 to show you just what part of your phone has used the power.

Accessing the monitor couldn't be easier. Tap on Settings > Battery and you will see an estimate of how long the available power will last (based on how you're using your phone at the time of checking).

Below the projected time of use left you will see a list of hardware and apps showing you exactly how much of the used power each element of the phone has taken. For example, if you don't connect to Wi-Fi very often but it uses a lot of power, then this could help you to decide to turn Wi-Fi off when you don't use it, saving you power, which will extend the time your phone will last before ti needs charging again.

If you're running low on power and you're not sure if your battery will last, then you can switch on power saving by going to Settings > Battery and tap the menu icon (3 dots). This will allow you to tap Battery saver to allow you to turn it on.

OK Google

Archos 55b Platinum Tips 3Google Now is a card-based virtual assistant, an app which will help you search the internet as well as plan your day, reply to messages and much more. It works with Android and iOS, and is especially well-integrated in to the Archos 55b Platinum and its home screen.

To access Google Now from your home screen, simply say the words "OK, Google" to make your phone start paying attention to you. Once you've enticed it, you can start making requests. Ask it a question, tell it to reply to a message or even set a calendar event for yourself!
