How to setup your BlackBerry Z10 for the first time

When turning your BlackBerry Z10 on for the first time, you'll be greeted by the First Time Setup. Like many mobile phones, this is both an introduction in how to navigate the handset and also a chance to set up basics like internet, WiFi and your BlackBerry ID.

To begin using your new BlackBerry Z10, Insert the SIM card, SD card and battery. Power up your handset and follow the step-by-step instructions below to navigate successfully through the First Time Setup procedure.

  1. Decide whether to use a 3G connection on your smartphone.
  2. If you are near a wireless network, you can connect to it on the Wi-Fi Setup page. Simply find the Wi-Fi network you wish to join and enter the password to access it.

  3. Read the License Agreement and accept if you agree to its terms.

  4. Choose which country your Z10 will be operating in.

    Agent tip

At any point, to move through a screen or skip a screen, you may need to swipe a finger from right to left across the display.

  5. Set up a new BlackBerry ID, or sign in with an existing one if you are already a BlackBerry user. If you encounter any difficulties with the sign-in process, you can troubleshoot the problem here or contact the Geek Squad on 0800 049 4335 for some one-on-one support.
  6. Decide whether to turn on the Diagnostics and Locations services by choosing either On or Off. Turning Diagnostics on can help improve the way the device works by sending information to BlackBerry about any problems you come across. Turning on Locations will tailor search results and other information to suit your current whereabouts.
  7. Check for updates to make sure your Z10 is running at its best. Your smartphone needs at least 20% battery to install any updates!
  8. Complete the Gestures tutorial to learn the best way to navigate your new handset. You must complete the tutorial to finish the setup wizard.

How to navigate using Gestures on the Blackberry Z10

The BlackBerry Z10 uses Gestures to navigate around the operating system, completely doing away with buttons (other than the power and volume keys on the side of the handset).

The Gestures feature was originally introduced in the BlackBerry PlayBook and now sees its smartphone debut on the BlackBerry Z10, so for those users who may not have used Gestures before here are a few simple instructions to help you get started.

Moving around using gestures

To move around or between pages of information, into or out of the Hub, simply use your finger on the screen to swipe left and right. When on a web page or other page which does not fit into one screen, simply use your finger to slide the page up and down. You can also pinch or pushto zoom in and out by using two fingers.

Use gestures to minimise an App

To “Go Home” or minimise an application, you need to move your finger from the BlackBerry logo up and into the screen. Start with your finger off the display area where the BlackBerry logo is and slide a finger up towards the middle of the phone. This will minimise the running application to a small active pane. Simply tap an active paneto bring it back to a full screen view! All active panes are applications running in real-time.

Showing options using gestures

To show options for an app (where available) or options for the entire device, simply swipe your finger down into the screen from the top edge of the handset.
Start with your finger off the display area, near to where the front-facing camera is located. Then slide your finger down towards the middle of the screen. This will bring down the options menu when applicable.

Peek at your Notifications

To peek at your notifications, start as if you are “Going Home” but hold the screen. Notification icons will appear down the left hand edge.
To view incoming notifications, from this position, simply slide your finger to the right. This will start to “Peek” into the Hub so you can tell more about the notification and snap back out if you do not wish to go all the way in. To snap out, simply slide the screen back the other way (Left, down). To open, slide the screen all the way to the right.
To skip “Peek” and go straight into the hub, slide the screen up and rightin one fluid motion.

Register the BlackBerry Z10 with your network

There is no longer a difference between BIS or BES, the handsets are either connected to BlackBerry or not. However, the device does not need connectivity to the BBI for internet or email any more.

Internet can now be accessed via a mobile network, but will not be as secure as running it through the BlackBerry internet service. This also means should an outage occur, email, internet and other functions will still work! BBI connectivity is indicated by the four BlackBerry dots next to the network indicator.

Enter Settings to register the BlackBerry with the BBI:

  1. Choose About
  2. Tap the Category drop-down list at the top
  3. elect Network
  4. Open the Overflow menu
  5. Choose Register BlackBerry
  6. Note the on-screen toasts.

There are three main responses:

Registration queued - This means that you're not in a good coverage area, move around and retry the request.Registered for BlackBerry services - If this appears on-screen, the device has full access to the BlackBerry Infrastructure and can use all features of the BlackBerry handset and services.

No response - If there is no response, move around and retry the registration. If there is still no reply, you may not have a BlackBerry service plan bolt-on. Refer to your mobile network to get the bolt-on.
