Unboxing and assembling your STK Hero X

So you've opened the box and taken out your STK Hero X for the first time. But what now? Well, it's now time to get your new mobile phone up and running, personalising it in the process. Before we turn the phone on, let's make sure we have everything we need.

What's In The Box?

First of all, let's make sure you have everything you need. Inside the box* you should find:

  • 1 x STK Hero X
  • 1 x USB cable
  • 1 x Mains power adapter
  • 1 x Wired headphones
  • 1 x Documentation pack
  • 1 x Screen protector
  • 1 x plastic case
  • 1 x SIM tray tool

*some box contents may vary

On the right-hand edge of the phone, you'll see a small pinhole near the top of the handset. This is where your SIM tray is hidden, and to eject it you'll need to push the SIM tray tool into the hole. If you can't find your SIM tray tool, you can use a regular pin instead. Push firmly to eject the tray.

STK hero x insert sim

The micro-SIM sits in end of the tray that goes into the phone first. Make sure the cut corner of the micro-SIM lines up with the cut corner of the SIM tray, otherwise you will struggle to push the tray in and you won't get any phone signal!

If you wish to put a microSD (memory) card into your STK Hero X, it should sit in the part of the SIM tray nearer the outside of the phone (see the image above). The metal contacts should face downwards, towards the back of the phone. Once the cards are sat correctly, push the tray back into the phone, making sure the pinhole of the tray lines up with the pinhole inside the phone.

That's all the assembly your STK will need, so hold down the power button for a couple of seconds until your smartphone turns on. You're now ready to continue on to the next step of our guide which is completing the setup wizard!

Set up your phone for the first time

If this is the first time you've turned on your new STK Hero X, it's time to complete the setup wizard! This is a fairly straightforward process which we've documented below to help make things easier to follow.

STK Hero X setup 1STK Hero X setup 2STK Hero X setup 3STK Hero X setup 4

  1. Turn your new phone on and you will see the Welcome screen. Choose your language from the list and press the arrow in the yellow circle when you're ready to continue.
  2. As this is a dual-SIM phone, you may be asked to pick which SIM you want to use for your mobile data. If you have SIMs for two different networks it's easy to tell them apart, otherwise you might need to compare the phone numbers to work out which SIM is which.
  3. You will now be asked to select your Wi-Fi network. Find your network name on the list then tap your finger on it. If you're not near your router and can't set up Wi-Fi, just tap Skip for now.
  4. Type in your Wi-Fi password in the box provided and press Connect. If you're unsure whether you've entered your password correctly, tick the Show password box to verify what you've typed in.
  5. You will then be invited to add your Google account. If you have an email address ending with or, or are migrating over from a previous Android phone, then enter your email address where shown and tap Next. If you don't have a Google account, tap Create a new account and fill in the details to get one set up for you. You can also Skip this step, but we would not recommend doing so because Android handsets rely on a Google account to download apps and sync data.

STK Hero X setup 5STK Hero X setup 6STK Hero X setup 7STK Hero X setup 8

  1. When prompted, enter your password into the STK Hero X, then tap Next to proceed. If you're signing up for a new account, complete the form.
  2. When you add a Google account you must agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, both of which you can inspect by tapping the required link. Tap Accept to continue.
  3. If you haven't set up any payment information on your Google account you will be asked to set some up now. This is optional, as many items are free to download from the Play Store, so tap your chosen payment method or tap Remind me later to skip this for now, then tap Continue.
  4. You must confirm the date and time in order for the internet and other services to work correctly. Tap on any field that's incorrect, or press Next to continue.

STK Hero X setup 9STK Hero X setup 10STK Hero X setup 11STK Hero X setup 12

  1. Now you must decide whether to secure your phone with a lock or not. Adding a lock screen adds a layer of protection to your data, but if you can't remember your password it can be difficult to sign back in. To lock your phone, tap set lock screen now. As we cover the lock screen setup in a later chapter, we're going to Skip for now.
  2. You must confirm that you wish to skip the lock screen setup, so press Skip anyway to continue.
  3. You will be asked to agree to using Google's services. These can automatically backup important account settings and localise some of your internet searches to make them more relevant to you. Tap Next to move on to the next page of the guide.

Your home screen will now be displayed. At the top is a green banner advising you that you can customise your home screen by touching and holding on the background wallpaper at any time. Tap Got it to dismiss this.

Navigating around the STK Hero X

At the very bottom of the phone are three touch buttons. In the middle, the house icon will always bring you back to the Home screen. To the left the square icon on the right shows you Recent apps, and allows you to switch quickly between them or close them. To the right, the curly arrow is the Back button and will take you back one step in menus or apps.

Archos Hero X Setup 6Above the Home icon you will see a white circular icon with six dots on it. This is the Apps icon, and will take you to a list of all the apps that are on your 50. Connecting to Wi-Fi and mobile networks

The STK Hero X is a great handset, but without an internet connection many of its finest features are redundant. Fresh apps can't be downloaded, existing apps can't be updated, and your social networks and email accounts can't retrieve new data! Make sure your phone is working to its fullest by getting connected using our short guide below.

Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

You may well have connected to your Wi-Fi router during the initial set up of your phone, but if you didn't, or wish to connect to a new network, then follow these simple steps to get connected.

STK Hero X wifi 1STK Hero X wifi 2STK Hero X wifi 3STK Hero X wifi 4

From the home screen:

  1. Swipe your finger down from the top of the screen twice, then tap on the cog in the top-right corner of the notification panel to access your Settings menu.
  2. In the Wireless & networks section, tap the Wi-Fi line to enter the settings.
  3. If you don't see any network names, check that the switch is turned on (showing green), tapping it to enable Wi-Fi if it is off. You will see a list of networks on screen, locate your network name in the list and tap on it.
  4. Enter the Wi-Fi password for your network in the box provided, ensuring you replicate any capital letters correctly, then tap Connect. The password can often be found on a sticker on your router, and may also be called a wireless passphrase, WEP key or WPA key.

If the password was accepted, you should now be connected to your wireless network and the Wi-Fi symbol will appear on the top line of the display, next to the signal bars.

Connect to Mobile Internet

Mobile internet access is usually disabled when your handset is connected to a Wi-Fi network, so you will need to turn Wi-Fi off to set up or troubleshoot mobile data connections. We'll help you do this, but don't forget to turn it back on again afterwards!

Archos Hero X Data 4When your mobile internet settings are correct, your phone will show a letter (G, E, 3G, H, H+ or 4G) and a pair of arrows just beside the signal bars on the top line of the display, so keep an eye out for this data indicator appearing!

  1. Swipe your finger down from the top of the phone screen twice, then tap on the cog to go to the Settings menu.
  2. Tap SIM cards to check your SIM is active.
  3. Your SIM should be in SIM slot 1. Make sure the toggle switch next to SIM slot 1 is active (blue). Press the Back button to go back to your Settings menu.
  4. Tap More to view mobile data settings.

STK Hero X internet 5STK Hero X internet 6STK Hero X internet 7STK Hero X internet 8

  1. Tap Mobile networks.
  2. Tap Access point names to see which settings are currently in use by the phone to connect to the internet. If no settings are saved, you may be asked to choose your mobile network from a list. Tap the correct line to select your network.
  3. If that doesn't connect you, or you can't see the correct network setting, we can pull the mobile internet settings from the SIM card. Tap the Menu icon (three dots in the top-right corner) and then tap Reset to default.
  4. A list of available network settings available on your SIM card will appear. If one of these corresponds to your network, tap the name to select it, then check for the data indicator.

If you're still not connected, you may need to enter the settings manually. To do so, go back into Access point names. Tap the + icon on the menu bar which will open a form for you to complete. We have created the Geek Squad Guide to APN Settings to help you find and enter settings for most UK mobile networks. Enter the details for your network, then tap the menu button (3 dots) and tap Save to set. Check the data indicator again.

If you are still not connected after this step, or your mobile network is not listed in our guide, then we would recommend contacting your mobile network to ask them to send the settings through to your handset.

Find out how to add your email accounts

Like most modern mobile phones, the STK Hero X supports multiple POP3, IMAP and Exchange accounts so if you have one email address for work and a separate one for home, receiving all those emails is easier than you think. Follow the guide below to set up your preferred email accounts.

Google account (Gmail) Setup

We covered setting up a Google account in the initial setup, but if you didn't complete it then you can add one now. A Google account is probably the most important account you can add to your STK Hero X, as without one you won't be able to download apps, or back your handset up.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the phone screen and tap on the Settings cog in the top-right corner of the screen.
  2. When the Settings screen opens, scroll down to the Personal section and tap on Accounts. Any accounts on your Hero X will show in the list. Tap Add account.
  3. For a Google account, tap on Google to continue.
  4. When prompted, type in your Google email address and tap Next.

  1. Enter your Gmail password then tap Next. If you're creating a new account, complete all sections of the form.
  2. Agree to the Terms of Service (which you can inspect by tapping any of the links) by tapping Accept to complete signing in to your Google account.
  3. You will be asked about backing up your Hero X to the Google account. This will allow you to recover data if your phone is reset, or replaced. If you don't want to do this, untick the box. Tap Next to proceed.
  4. You will then be asked about setting up payment info for your Play Store account, which can be linking a payment card, redeeming a voucher, or having items billed through your mobile network if they allow this. It isn't necessary to do this right now, but does make it easier for you to purchase apps and media through the Play Store. Choose your payment method, or select Remind me later, then tap Next.

Email for your Google account will be delivered into the Gmail app on your Hero X.

Email Setup

Adding a non-Google email address is a very similar process to adding a Gmail address, but you may need additional information if your account is a non-standard one.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the phone screen and tap on the Settings cog in the top-right corner of the screen.
  2. When the Settings screen opens, scroll down to the Personal section and tap on Accounts. Any accounts on your Hero X will show in the list. Tap Add account.
  3. If this isn't a Google email address, choose either IMAP or POP3 - most accounts are IMAP these days, so pick that one first.
  4. Enter your email address in the field provided then tap Next.

STK Hero X email 5STK Hero X email 6STK Hero X email 7STK Hero X email 8

  1. Enter the password for your email account in the space provided, then tap Next.
  2. If everything was successful you will see the account options screen which lets you choose how often your handset checks for new mail, and other account specific options. Make your choices, then tap Next.
  3. You will be asked to choose a name for the account, and you should enter your name in the lower box. This will be displayed on any emails you send from your phone so you should probably keep it clean!
  4. You will then see a line corresponding to your mail account showing on the Accounts screen of your Hero X. If you have any other accounts to add, repeat the process to add them.

If your account did not configure automatically, you will need to supply some more settings and enter them manually to be able to receive email. Tap Manual setup to start entering these settings. You will need to know your account type (POP, IMAP or Exchange), email username, password, and incoming & outgoing mail server information.

Check out Geek Squad's guide to email server settings to assist you with inputting this information, but if your provider is not listed you may need to contact them directly for more specific information .

  1. We're entering a 4-digit PIN, but a password is set in much the same manner. Enter your chosen code via the keyboard, then tap Continue (a pattern requires you to set a PIN as a backup!).
  2. Confirm your unlock PIN or Password by entering it again, then tap OK.
  3. You will be asked about Notifications, and showing their content. Hiding content will show that you have a notification, but not the details. Tap your choice then tap Next.

Read our tips to learn more about your phone

You should now be a little more familiar with your STK Hero X, so let's take a moment to run through a couple of tips to help you get the most out of your new phone.

If you have a question about your phone and can't find the answer here, why not post a comment at the bottom of the page and share it with us!

stk sync 5e tips 04Doodle Control

Doodle control is an easy way to interact with your phone to control the music player and launch apps.

Go to Settings > Doodle control and tap the switch to turn it on.

You'll see a list of gestures that you can draw on the lock screen which will either perform an action, or launch an app.

There are tick boxes to control the gestures controlling the music player, and switches to enable and disable the doodles themselves.

The letter doodles can be customised to launch any app by tapping the line and choosing the app from a list.

Monitor your Data Usage

stk sync 5e tips 02The STK Hero X comes with a really useful monitor to help you keep an eye on your data usage. This should hopefully help prevent you from running up a large bill through using more data than your allowance.

To set this up go to Settings > Data Usage > and then tap on the tab with your Network name.

You can set your billing cycle with a drop-down menu to ensure the counter resets when your mobile bill is produced every month, and there's a switch to set a limit to stop you going over your allowance.

A grey slider lets you set a warning level to alert you when you're approaching your data limit, and if you've enabled the limit switch there'll be an orange slider to set that level too.

Just remember that this shows the data usage as your phone interprets it, not as your mobile network calculates it. This means that you might benefit from setting the sliders a little below your actual allowance to avoid going over - at least until you see how they compare!
