Facebook safety enhanced by CEOP
Date: July 12 2010
Teenagers using Facebook can now keep themselves safer on the social network thanks to a new button allowing them to report abuse and grooming online.
Designed by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, the button is similar to one already on the likes of Bebo and Windows Live Messenger, which used to be known as MSN.
The ClickCEOP graphic ensures anyone between 13 and 18 using the social network in the UK has quick access to the authorities to let them know about anyone who is behaving inappropriately towards them.
But it must first be downloaded to their Facebook profile. When they log in a notification will appear suggesting they do so. It can also be added from CEOP's own Facebook page.
If you're a parent or guardian, talk to your children about internet safety. Social networks are great places for having fun but there is as big a risk of "stranger danger" as in the real world. Encourage older teenagers to download this button just in case or for younger teens, ensure they place it on their profile.
