When I heard about Geek Squad I thought it would be a quirky job I might enjoy. It is never going to be one of those careers that completely bores you. No two days are the same, every day is a different challenge.
Geek Squad, Technology and Me!
- The most difficult call I've ever had...
...was a callout to help this guy who had a virus on his computer. It was a full on disaster and his machine was in all kinds of trouble. I did four in-depth scans of his machine that took eight hours to complete. I was at this poor guy's house all day, but sometimes that's what it takes and we do that for one fixed fee.
But sadly in the end, there was just nothing we could do to get rid of that virus. We were devastated but I had no choice but to wipe his whole computer and start again. I hate doing that. It's a real low, but we tried literally every possible angle to beat it before getting there, and by doing so I saved him from having to buy a new machine. - I had one really strange night out...
...in the GeekMobile, which is what our little cars are called. I was driving back from a callout late at night and suddenly a load of drunken girls started diving out into the road wanting a ride. They thought the car was funny and they were all just screaming at me for a lift. The whole thing was quite scary. I didn't take them up on it. There were five girls and only one seat. - On callouts, I try my hardest to avoid...
...drinking too many cups of tea. I'll just have a glass of water. I find that tea makes you need the loo and that's the last thing you want when you're trying to fix something really complicated. Or even worse needing to go when you've finished the job quicker than expected and you're driving back in the GeekMobile. It wouldn't be good.
Essential Gadget
Cellebrite
This software transfers information from one phone to another. I'm desperate to use it.
Favourite Gadget
Slingbox
You set it up in your house and can watch your satellite from a TV elsewhere in the UK or abroad.
I'd recommend...
BlackBerry
It keeps me in contact with everybody. No matter where I go I'm in touch with messages and info.
Watch out for...
Sonos
Sonos systems have been around for a while but we use them a lot during installations for customers these days. They are becoming more and more popular. You can set up all your music to play wirelessly all over your house. That kind of thing really appeals to me. I like stuff that allows you to access your computer no matter where you are in the world. That's really useful but of course you have to be connected to your network at home. As Agents, we love setting up Home Networking for people.
My most satisfying Geek Squad moment...
...when people realise we're more than just your average tech person. I don't find the term geek insulting, but I wouldn't say I'm a massive geek compared to some Geek Squad Agents. We're helpful guys and hopefully the sort of knowledgeable and friendly people customers enjoy having around.
WE CARE ABOUT TECHNOLOGY AND ABOUT YOU
Our home visits are great. The fact we sort problems face-to-face is a massive bonus for many people. We can do anything while most companies just sort your TV or your phone. We do the lot from your PlayStation to iPhone.
